2 NOTE On Syd's return from WWII in 1945 couple attempted to adopt a boy
3 CONC they called Graeme Frank Summers. They picked him up in Auckland
3 CONC and returned to New Plymouth by train (they got some interesting
3 CONC looks as Sydney was still in Uniform having just arrived back in
3 CONC NZL and Sarah shouldn't have been able to have a baby with him away).
3 CONC The adoption failed and the boy returned when the mother wanted
3 CONC him back.

2 NOTE The couple attempted to adopt a third boy (after the second Graeme)
3 CONC A medical check revealed the mother of the boy as having syphilis
3 CONC which had been passed on to the boy. They were told the child would
3 CONC become blind and deaf and that they could not adopt him (they were
3 CONC still willing to do so). Much later it was found that the medical report
3 CONC was in error, but by this time it was too late.
