1 NAME Mary /WOODBRIDGE/
1 SEX F
1 NOTE When widowed from Abel Alleyne, Mary Alleyne, bought an estate in Braintree from James
2 CONC Bradford 2 Jan 1770 for 2,800 pounds sterling, the fine mansion house of which was
2 CONC originally built by William Coddington in 1636 and remodelled by Judge Edmund Quincy in
2 CONC 1706. It had 400 acres of land surrounding it. The timbers of which the house was
2 CONC built were cut from trees that grew in State Street, Boston, and were rafted across
2 CONC the bay to Quincy. There is a hidden room lighted from the upper panes of the windows
2 CONC of the kitchen below, and shafts with ropes for drawing up provisions from the cellar.
2 CONC

Just behind the house is a rising ground commanding a view of the ocean. This has
2 CONC been laid out in building lots and named Alleyne Terrace. Imbedded over the door in the
2 CONC rear of the house is a canon ball.
2 CONC

The house sold several times and finally bought by the Metropolitan Park Commission
2 CONC in 1906. The Colonial Dames leased it for an indefinite period, using it as a museum
2 CONC and calling it "The Dorothy Q. House", because it had belonged to the Quincy family
2 CONC at one time.
2 CONC

Pasted on the back of a picture of the Dorothy Q. House in the possession of
2 CONC Miss Edith Doane BEck, 40 Hawthorne Road, Brookline, Mass. in 1930 was the following
2 CONC from a Braintree Newspaper of Dec. 8, 1787:

2 CONC Braintree adjoining to the estate formerly belonging to Mr. Burland. The fertility of the
2 CONC soil, its contiguousness to salt water, together with its beautiful situation for a
2 CONC gentleman's Country Seat, it is presumed will be sufficient inducement for many
2 CONC purchasers to attend the sale which will be at the Dwelling House on the premises.
