1 CONT EXCERPTS FROM `THE TRAFALGAR TIMES' - Monday, October 8, 1945:
1 CONT `PIONEER PASSES ON - Mr. John RODDA'
1 CONT One by one the pioneers of earlier days are passing to their last
1 CONT haven of rest, their life work well and timely done. Their lot was
1 CONT hard, but
1 CONT almost incredible difficulties were overcome by dogged perseverence
1 CONT and long years of labour day after day from the early morning until
1 CONT the darkening shades of night. Australia owes more than a passing
1 CONT tribute to those early settlers who paved the way for the greater
1 CONT development of this country and its attendant prosperity as we see
1 CONT it today. One such of these grand old pioneers was Mr. John RODDA,
1 CONT who passed away at Sale a few weeks ago at the advanced age of 86
1 CONT years. The late Mr. RODDA was born at Creswick in 1859 and two years
1 CONT later resided with his parents at Daylesford where his father was a
1 CONT mine manager. Some years later his father acquired land at Musk
1 CONT Creek, about five miles from Daylesford, where he gained farming
1 CONT experience at a very early age and carried on until 1895 when the
1 CONT lure of Gippsland made a strong appeal. Coming to Warragul he again
1 CONT took up farming pursuits in the locality known as No. 1 road where
1 CONT he carried on for a while. What a different proposition farming is
1 CONT there today! Selling out, he purchased a farming property at
1 CONT Ellinbank, but disposing of this, he next purchased a farm at
1 CONT Thorpdale, where he resided for about 44 years, together with his
1 CONT wife and unusually large family of fourteen, all of whom are still
1 CONT living, with the exception of one, who died from the effects of war
1 CONT injurues in the great world war. While in Thorpdale, he was elected
1 CONT a member of the Narracan Shire Council, was appointed Justice of the
1 CONT Peace for the Eastern Bailiwick, was also a land valuator following
1 CONT the Great War, and also took an active part in local movements for
1 CONT the advancement of the district and was a devout churchman and
1 CONT Sunday School Superintendant.
1 CONT Such was the late John RODDA and the world has been all the better
1 CONT for his living. His life partner, Mrs. RODDA, has been his constant
1 CONT partner and companion for 65 years, but, unhappily is not at present
1 CONT in good health. Members of his family are - Lucinda (Mrs. Dave
1 CONT MARSHALL) Melbourne; John, Trafalgar; Elizabeth (Mrs DAVIES)
1 CONT Melbourne; Thomas, Sale; Edmund, Morwell; Benjamin, Murrumbeena;
1 CONT Harold, Morwell; Albert, Thorpdale; Sarah (Mrs. NAYLOR) Bentleigh;
1 CONT Winifred (deceased); May (Mrs. Pederson) Sale; Edith (Mrs STIRLING)
1 CONT Thorpdale; Elsie (Mrs J. HILLS) Sale; Percy, Sale. It is interesting
1 CONT to record that there are 81 living descendants comprising 13 sons
1 CONT and daughters, 44 grand-children and 21 great-grand-children. The
1 CONT Trafalgar cemetery is his last resting place and sympathy for his
1 CONT wife and family in their loss is general throughout the district.
