1 CONT
1 CONT By Elsie WRIGHT (eldest daughter of Jack and Elsie): Jack's
1 CONT occupation , for most of his working life was as a patrolman for the
1 CONT Country Roads Board, his area being from Warragul to Flynn's Creek,
1 CONT near Rosedale. In the late 1920's, my father and Uncle Jack RODDA,
1 CONT were working for the Narracan Shire Council, with their horses and
1 CONT drays, building what is now, the Princes Highway. Unexpectedly, all
1 CONT the Shire Workers were told to finish up, as it appears the Shire
1 CONT ran out of money. Dad and Uncle Jack, had no other work to do, so
1 CONT they just kept on working with their horses and drays, building the
1 CONT road... The road was taken over by the Country Roads Board and one
1 CONT day while they were working, a man, representing the Board, came
1 CONT along and asked what they were doing. When they told him the story,
1 CONT he employed them immediately, telling them to continue the
1 CONT construction of the road. Dad worked with them for many years. He
1 CONT had a few acres of land and a few cows - I think he would have been
1 CONT a farmer if he had the choice. He built a tennis court, when we
1 CONT lived at Morwell, and both he and Mum played tennis, as did all the
1 CONT neighbours and friends around.
