To the glory of God and in loving memory of Arthur Richard Fitzherbert,
son of Lt Col Richard Fitzherbert (Rifle Brigade) of Somersal Herbert, Derbyshire.
At the age of 62 he heard the call and volunteered as a trooper in the N.Z.E.F. He
served in Egypt and Palestine and laid down his life on 27th March 1917 fighting heroically
against the Turk by the Gate of Gaza. His body rests nearby at Deir el Belah. His was a
rare spirit, cheerful in adversity, faithful under temptation, of incomparable courage,
beloved by friends and honoured by all. Though far away the shattered body fill a desert
grave the spirit still lives in sure hope of the great reunion.
