The Earl of Perth on Melfort.
We have to announce the death, which occured early yesterday morning at the Cottage, Kew,
of the Early of Perth and Melfort, his Majesty's most aged peer, who had lived in the five
reigns. George Drummond, cheif of the Clan Drummond, Viscount Melfort and Forth Baron Drummond
of Cargill, Baron Drummond of Stobhall and Montifex, and Baron Drummond o Richertoun, Castlemain,
and Galstoun, all in the peerage of Scotland; hereditary Thane of Lennox, and hereditary Steward
of the Menteith and Strathearn; Duc de Melfort, Comte de Lussan and Baron de Valrose in France,
was born in London on May 6 1807. Educated in France and Scotland, he joined the 93rd Sutherland
Highlanders in 1824, and became a captain at 18. He succeeded his uncle in the French honours
in 1840, and in 1841 established before the Conseil d'Etat in France and the Tribunal de la Seine
his pedigree from the Earls and Dukes of Perth and Melfort and his right of succession to the
French honours of Duck of Melfort and Perth, Comte de Lussan and Baron de Valrose. The Scottish
earldoms of Perth and Melfort were restored to him by special command and recommedation of the
late Queen Victoria by an Act of Parliment, which was unanimously passed by both Houses, and
received the Royal assent on June 28, 1853. Lord Perth was married, first in 1831, to the
    Baroness Albertine de Rotberg, widow of General Comte Rapp, peer of France (she died in 1842);
and secondly, in 1847, to Susan Henrietta, widow of Colonal Burrowes, of Dangan Castle, Meath,
and daughter of Mr Thomas Bermingham Sewell, of Athenry, by Harriett, his wife, daughter of
Lord Decies, Archbishop of Tuam. Lady Edith Drummond, his daughter by his second marriage,
succeeds to the Earldom of Melfort and the French titles, his grandson by his first marriage,
Lord Drummond, having died unmarried in 1887. Viscount Strathallan, his kinsman, succeeds to the
title of Chief of the Clan and to the Barony of Drummond of 1487, and after having been served
heir will succeed to the Earldom of Perth. The Drummonds, according to unvarying tradition, are
of Hungarian origin, Maurice, the first of the family, who settled in Scotland, having come
over from that country with Edgar Atheling and Margaret, his sister, afterwards Queen of Scotland.
For many years the Earl of Perth was engaged in litigation, but without success, to recover
the old family estates. The late peer, who was the 14th Earl of Perth and 6th Earl of Melfort,
was a major of the Victoria Middlesex Rifles (Voluntear) form 1853 to 1859.
