1 NOTE Jan L'Espinasse was appointed Director General of the Colony of Essequebo Demerara (then
2 CONC the property, under charter, of the Dutch West India Company) in September 1784. He took
2 CONC up the appointment in February 1785. In his time, Strabroek (now Georgetown) at the mouth
2 CONC of the Demerara river was finally settled upon as the seat of government, and was much
2 CONC enlarged. He resigned about May 1789 (ex rel. J. Graham Cruickshank).
