1 CONT After they were married, William and Muriel lived on a farming
1 CONT property at Thorpdale, they later moved to a farm on Shute Rd,
1 CONT overlooking the Thorpdale township. Like the rest of the family, he
1 CONT had a wide knowledge of horses, the clearing the land for the
1 CONT purpose of growing crops and the care of cattle. This was to serve
1 CONT him in good stead when he changed his position in 1923, to work for
1 CONT the Narracan Council. He was the driver of the first motorized
1 CONT machinery that was used by the Narracan Shire Council, which was a
1 CONT truck, a 2-ton Leyland, that cost 408 pounds. Jacki was appointed
1 CONT the driver be used for the Narracan Shire Council. Trucks were
1 CONT gradually to be phased in to replace the horses that had always been
1 CONT used. Even the roads had been made with horse-drawn scoops and
1 CONT ploughs. Just ordinary shovels in the hands of many of the RODDA
1 CONT menfolk had been used in the formation of roads in the district
1 CONT during the hard times. He rose to the position of Foreman of
1 CONT Works, with the Narracan Shire, a position he held until his
1 CONT retirement.
