1 CONT Benjamin served in the Light Horse, during the First World War and
1 CONT went overseas with the 59th Battalion of the A.I.F. and served in
1 CONT France. He was a Lewis Gunner and in 1917 (I think) at Polygon Wood
1 CONT was the sole survivor of a four man crew when a shell burst
1 CONT overhead. He was hit by shrapnel and was subsequently invalided to
1 CONT England. His convalescence was spent in Cornwall where he was able
1 CONT to learn of his forebears and meet relatives. Some of the farming
1 CONT methods he observed there were put to use when he returned to farm
1 CONT life in Thorpdale. When work started at Yallourn at the power
1 CONT generating project he went there with a horse team and was employed
1 CONT on the prepatory excavation work. He subsequently stayed on as a
1 CONT fitter's assistant, returning home by foot or by bike. Benjamin sold
1 CONT the farm in Sale, and bought a house in Murrumbeena. He worked then
1 CONT with the S.E.C. at Yarraville and later with Kelly & Lewis at
1 CONT Springvale. He helped Perce RODDA roof many houses in
1 CONT Gippsland, and as far afield as Seafield. He later worked at the
1 CONT Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in Parkville and after he retired in
1 CONT 1954, he went to Canada to visit his son, Bert, and his wife
1 CONT Margaret. It has been recounted by his family that he could be seen
1 CONT being passed in his shiny buggy drawn by his ponies, and reaching
1 CONT into his waistcoat pocket for his piece of hard licorice from which
1 CONT he shaved pieces off with his pocket knife. During his retirement,
1 CONT Benjamin joined the Hughesdale Art Club and took up painting and
1 CONT created, over the years, many painting in oils and pastels. When in
1 CONT the 1980's Benjamin and Margaret went to live with Landy and Cath on
1 CONT their property at Glenburn.
