1 CONT Albert began his schooling at Warragul, but spent some years at
1 CONT Thorpdale State School. He was brought up with an interest in
1 CONT farming, he owned a small farm property at Thorpdale. About 1920, he
1 CONT took over the carrying businesses that had been operated by Sarah
1 CONT Rodda PEARCE, after her husband had been killed in the First World
1 CONT War. They added trucks later, and the horses gradually disappeared
1 CONT from the business. Albert and Liz were a great team, their home was
1 CONT the hub of life in Thorpdale for many years. Dr. SWAIN and the
1 CONT others of Trafalgar had rooms there and people waited in their
1 CONT lounge room. Their trucks often were used as buses with wooden seats
1 CONT set in rows, for trips to the picture theatre at Mirboo North, or a
1 CONT ball at Trafalgar, Narracan East or Yarragon. One special bus they
1 CONT had built was like a great square box that drivers affectionately
1 CONT name the `Glass Coffin'. It had straight glass sides for scenic
1 CONT viewing and was used for special occasions, ie: ferrying visitors,
1 CONT and councillors, etc. Liz, on one of those dance trips, ordered
1 CONT Walter MOTT, just five feet, five inch man, to "see that the fellows
1 CONT behaved themselves on that bus". The fellows were mostly six feet
1 CONT and over - hefty spud diggers who could lump a bag of spuds without
1 CONT any effort, and I'm sure could have lifted Wally too without any
1 CONT stress. Albert was a quiet, slow and softly spoken, a very different
1 CONT intonation in his voice - perhaps a little bit of the Cornish
1 CONT showing up in his fourth generation Australian. They had no children
1 CONT of their own.
