1 CONT Sarah went to school at Musk Creek and then at Thorpdale State
1 CONT School. While her husband was at the war, Sarah continued on with
1 CONT the carrying business and her love for and knowledge of horses was
1 CONT used to full advantage. As many as 6 horses were needed to be
1 CONT harnessed to the wagon when the roads from Childers were sometimes
1 CONT axle deep in mud in some places on the road to the butter factory
1 CONT and railhead at Thorpdale. Then of course, there was the stabling,
1 CONT feeding, the grooming and constant attention to the harness.
1 CONT shocking The bitter cold of two winters and the responsibility for
1 CONT three small children became too much for Sarah Jane, especially as
1 CONT there was a certain amount of small town criticism when she shocked
1 CONT the town by hiring a male driver to assist with the heavier work.
1 CONT The business prospered, but in desperation she sold the business to
1 CONT her brother, Albert, and his wife, who carried it into the era when
1 CONT the motorized transport expanded it into the largest in Gippsland.
1 CONT She bought a farm at Ellinbank, preparing for the time her husband
1 CONT was to return, at a place they had planned, but that was not to be.
1 CONT Just before the war ended, while on service at Fontein in France,
1 CONT Raymond was killed in action. Sarah was a widow, with three
1 CONT children, at the age of 24 years. John RODDA, Sarah's father, drove
1 CONT up the hill to the house in Ellinbank to tell Sarah of Raymond's
1 CONT death. Sarah broke her arm and could not continue with the farm, it
1 CONT was sold. With the shortage of housing, just after the war, they
1 CONT lived in a tent for a while. at Warragul. It was while she was there
1 CONT that she met John NAYLOR. They were married at the little English
1 CONT Church in Clifton Hill, Victoria. They lived at Alphington, a suburb
1 CONT of Melbourne while the kids were growing up, at 449 Heidleberg Rd,
1 CONT two doors down from the Tower Hotel.
